- The boat itself is nothing,
strength in the oar.

Compact smartphones have recently come in two types: the first, the most common, are budget and rather boring gadgets. The second option, unfortunately, much less popular, is devices with “adult” technical stuffing, which cost a lot. One such gadget, for example, is the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. Our test subject today is something in between. It is not too boring: it has a more or less modern system-on-a-chip, there is support for LTE, and the device costs, for all that, quite moderate money - about ten thousand rubles. And this is at the current rate!

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

The smartphone is made in the new Sony style: it looks like its older brother - Xperia Z3. The E3 has similar body proportions, key layout, and a similar corner radius. Perhaps the most noticeable external difference between the E3 and the Z3 is that the former is significantly smaller. They are really convenient to operate with one hand - the thumb reaches all four corners of the screen without any problems. The device does not weigh very much - 144 grams. The thickness of the body is also average at the same time - eight and a half millimeters.

As usual with Sony, the E3 does not have any keys on the front panel. All buttons are touch sensitive, they are located directly on the display. At the top of the panel is the lens of the front 0.3-megapixel camera.

At the corners of the Xperia E3 case there are polycarbonate plastic overlays - almost the same as those of the older sister Z3. The only difference is that they must absorb shock when the device falls, and here the corners do not extinguish anything and play a purely decorative role. The power and volume keys are located on the right side. The travel of the buttons is short and distinct.

Sony Xperia E3 - left and top ends

A contrasting aluminum-like plastic insert is put on all ends, adding charm to the device - and again, similarities with the Xperia Z3. Unless there is real aluminum, and here it is a toy one. The universal 3.5 mm audio jack is placed on the top end, and the Micro-USB interface is placed on the left side. The bottom end is empty.

The "back" of the device is made of matte plastic. Its surface is non-staining and rough - not like the Z3, but the device does not slip out of the hands during operation. The lens of the main, five-megapixel camera, along with a diode flash, is placed in the upper part of the panel. At the bottom of the panel is a slot for an external speaker.

The back cover, by the way, is removable. Under it are slots for installing microSD memory cards and a SIM card in Micro-SIM format. At the same time, users do not have access to the battery. If you need to replace the battery, the device will have to be carried to a service center - well, or take a screwdriver.

In general, the device looks strict and quite nice. We have no comments on the assembly: during the week of testing, we did not find any suspicious backlashes, the test for twisting and breaking was passed without any excesses, and also without a single attempt to creak with plastic from the smartphone. Sony Xperia E3 is available in white, black, lemon and brown colors.

⇡ Display

The Sony Xperia E3 has a 4.5-inch matrix with a frankly low resolution - 480 × 854 pixels. Its pixel density is moderate - 218 dpi. Of course, by modern standards, this is quite a bit, but for a budget device it will do. Separate dots, of course, are visible even if you do not bring the device to your eyes, but during everyday use this does not interfere too much. The pixelation effect is noticeable only if you look at the screen, and even then only on contrasting transitions and small fonts. Movies and photos look quite detailed.

The device uses an IPS-matrix (in-plane switching technology). As you know, the quality of such matrices varies greatly, and it is in budget devices that it often leaves much to be desired - manufacturers save money, but since it is already indecent to install TN in our time, they try to find cheaper IPS. In the case of the Xperia E3, this is fortunately not the case. The viewing angles of the screen are quite wide: if you wish, you can watch a movie together on the device or, as an option, peep at how someone is playing. True, the definition of viewing angles (the angle at which the contrast does not fall below 10: 1) is one thing, but real sensations are another. The contrast is still significantly reduced when the view deviates from the perpendicular, although the cherished 10:1, of course, remains at almost any street.

The screen is quite responsive: it quickly and accurately responds to touch, recognizes gestures without difficulty. Erroneous touches can occur due to the fact that the screen of the device is small, but in practice their number during testing was minimal. The device can be used with loose gloves - it reacts correctly to touch. The display supports up to five simultaneous key presses.

Despite the fact that the Xperia E3 is a budget device, its display is made quite well. qualitatively. used One technology Glass Solution (OGS) - an air gap between the matrix and protective glass no front panel.

The front panel is covered with a polarizing filter that reduces unwanted glare and reflections. There is even a hint of an oleophobic coating; however, it could be more efficient. In any case, the glass of the front panel is not associated with window glass - and this is already good.

The stock of brightness of the smartphone Sony Xperia E3 pleasantly surprised us: the maximum luminosity of the white field is 532 cd/m 2 . This is a very high brightness - some flagship smartphones were not even close. Information on the screen remains readable even in direct sunlight, and there is absolutely no need to twist the brightness slider to the maximum indoors. The minimum brightness of the screen was not turned up, which is also very good - 24 candela per square meter. Such a wide range of brightness allows you to comfortably use the device in the dark and under the sun.

The luminosity of the black field is moderate for such a high brightness - 0.53 candela per square meter (in this case, less is better). Of course, at the maximum level of backlight, the black color is slightly overexposed, but in general it looks quite deep. The screen contrast is high - 1004:1. Very good, really great.

The color temperature matches the reference value of 6500 K in almost all shades of gray - it averages 6600 K. The Sony shell provides the ability to software settings white balance, but we do not see any need to use it - the color temperature is fine.

Unfortunately, the calibrated screen is not without flaws. What is the grayscale gamma curve, what are the curves of the color components - they all have a noticeable dip in almost the entire length. This means that almost all shades of the primary colors look darker than they should. In practice, of course, this is not very noticeable until you compare the E3 with something more successfully tuned.

But the color gamut of the Xperia E3 display, on the contrary, almost completely coincides with the standard sRGB color gamut (98.3%) - this is very good. The colors on the smartphone display look believable and realistic. In general, the screen of the budget Xperia E3 is very good, even by "adult" standards. Still, the resolution would be higher - and in its category it would have no equal.

⇡ Hardware and performance

In terms of performance, the smartphone has nothing to surprise with - the Sony Xperia E3 has a rather old system-on-chip Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 modification MSM8926. It has been installed in mid-range smartphones for a long time, the platform already has a successor - Snapdragon 410 MSM8916, but it did not reach E3. Recall that the “400th” includes four ARM Cortex-A7 cores operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz; the platform is made using a 28-nanometer process technology.

We have already studied this platform far and wide: you should not expect a high level of computing power from it, even despite the low screen resolution. However, it is thanks to the resolution that the smartphone is quite capable of running smoothly: it displays system animations very smoothly, quickly switches between applications. The device copes with everyday tasks very well - after all, what else is required from a budget gadget?

In the general synthetic test AnTuTu Benchmark 5, the gadget scored exactly eighteen and a half thousand points. The result is quite acceptable - about the same as that of classmates and slightly more expensive devices. However, it is worth noting that flagship smartphones in this test gain 40-50 thousand points, so you should not flatter yourself. .

RAM in the device is one gigabyte. Built-in flash memory - only four gigabytes, of which less than two are available to the user - in this case, you can not do without a memory card (you can install microSD in the device). For example, almost immediately after installing our package of test applications and saving a couple of dozen photos, the smartphone began to complain about the lack of free memory. Not good.

With video playback in standard definition and the launch of casual arcade games, the device copes very well. The picture does not twitch, the number of frames per second practically does not fall below the cherished thirty FPS. In a simple game task Basemark 2 Taiji smartphone shows an average of 54 frames per second. The result is good, especially when compared with competitors.

The gadget does not give up even when running more resource-intensive applications, except that in three-dimensional toys the image periodically twitches. Overall, though, the Xperia E3 performs surprisingly well in 3D applications.

The device quite confidently copes with most of the tasks that can be offered to a budget smartphone. It is not worth demanding more from a device of this category. There is enough power here.

⇡ Communication

For the European market, two versions of the Sony Xperia E3 have been prepared: one can work with two SIM-cards, the second - in fourth-generation networks, but with only one SIM. A version with 4G support came to us for testing. In theory, it can receive data at speeds up to 150 Mbps (LTE Cat. 4), but in practice it all depends on mobile operator. We have no comments on the quality of signal reception. The volume margin of the earpiece is decent, the interlocutors do not complain about poor hearing. Talking on the Xperia E3 is quite comfortable.

The smartphone has a standard set of wireless interfaces. The gadget supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC. The radio module with GPS and GLONASS is responsible for navigation in the device. The device finds its location quite quickly - a smartphone can be used as a car navigator. Less than a minute after the launch of the profile test, the gadget was guided by ten satellites, and the navigation error radius was fourteen meters - pretty well.

⇡ Offline work

In terms of battery life, everything is quite prosaic and simple: at high loads, the smartphone's batteries last for a working day, at moderate loads - for a day or even a little more. During testing, there were no situations for the smartphone to be discharged before the end of the working day, although the device was used as the main means of communication. The device has an 8.85 Wh (2330 mAh, 3.8 V) battery, which is enough to provide a long battery life.

Traditionally for Sony, the device has a proprietary STAMINA mode that disables data transfer in standby mode. There is also an option to save power when the battery is low, which disables a number of "gluttonous" functions. Also, the smartphone can turn on / off Wi-Fi depending on the location and transfer data in the background in a queue. It is worth digging into these parameters and adjusting them for yourself - they help to extend the life of the battery by an hour or two.

⇡ Camera

The set of cameras in the smartphone is very modest by modern standards. The front camera here, for example, is only 0.3 megapixels. It can only be used in good light. Even in a normal, more or less bright room, the picture is covered with artifacts and becomes almost unreadable. The main camera is five megapixel. It is equipped with an auto focus system and is supplemented by a diode flash.

Software

The smartphone runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system. A proprietary Sony shell is installed on top of it. The same as in the flagship Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact - with all the options and "chips", without any restrictions. During the week of testing, we were once again convinced that, in our opinion, Sony currently has one of the best shells for Android smartphones. Its charm is not in software bells and whistles, not in any options, but in the stability of work. It is thanks to the well-established firmware that even the budget Sony gadget works very smoothly, without slowdowns and freezes. For an inexpensive Android smartphone, this is a rare quality. The set of standard system applications has been supplemented file manager, "reader" electronic documents, notes service and others useful programs. It is noteworthy that if you need to free up a couple of megabytes of disk space, these applications can be removed - they are not sewn into the shell. In the case of Xperia E3 with its four gigabytes of memory, this is very relevant.

⇡ Conclusion

Talking about the Sony Xperia E3 without mentioning its price is simply impossible: its cost is its main trump card. If anyone managed to forget, we recall that we are talking about a device worth ten thousand rubles (and in some online stores even less). Even before the price increase, this was a small amount for a decent smartphone from a brand of the first category, and now such a price can be considered almost a gift. What does the user get for this money?

AdvantagesSony Xperia E3:

  • bright and contrast display;
  • support for fourth generation networks;
  • perfectly optimized firmware with a rich set of applications.

FlawsSony Xperia E3:

  • small amount of built-in flash memory;
  • both cameras of the device are frankly weak.

This time the list of pros and cons turned out to be very short. The fact is that all the main components of the budget Xperia - hardware, battery, the quality of the case materials - are just good. No frills and records, so we do not write them down as dignity. However, for a smartphone in the lower price category, the Xperia E3 is at a very decent level. And if you are looking for a compact and inexpensive device that will work stably and have plus or minus all the current "smart" features, then the Sony Xperia E3 may top the list of candidates for the purchase. Unless we do not recommend it to those who like to shoot.

Accelerometer(or G-sensor) - device position sensor in space. As a main function, the accelerometer is used to automatically change the orientation of the image on the display (vertical or horizontal). Also, the G-sensor is used as a pedometer, it can be controlled by various functions of the device by turning or shaking.
Gyroscope- a sensor that measures the angles of rotation relative to a fixed coordinate system. Able to measure rotation angles in several planes simultaneously. The gyroscope together with the accelerometer allows you to determine the position of the device in space with high accuracy. In devices that use only accelerometers, measurement accuracy is lower, especially when moving quickly. Also, the capabilities of the gyroscope can be used in modern games for mobile devices.
Light sensor- a sensor, thanks to which the optimal values of brightness and contrast are set for a given level of illumination. The presence of the sensor allows you to increase the operating time of the device from the battery.
Proximity sensor- a sensor that detects when the device is close to the face during a call, turns off the backlight and locks the screen, preventing accidental pressing. The presence of the sensor allows you to increase the operating time of the device from the battery.
Geomagnetic sensor- a sensor for determining the direction of the world in which the device is directed. Tracks the orientation of the device in space relative to the Earth's magnetic poles. The information received from the sensor is used in mapping programs for orientation in the area.
Atmospheric pressure sensor- sensor for accurate measurement of atmospheric pressure. It is part of the GPS system, allows you to determine the height above sea level and speed up the location.
touch ID- Fingerprint identification sensor.

Accelerometer / Geomagnetic / Illumination / Proximity

Satellite navigation:

GPS(Global Positioning System - global positioning system) - a satellite navigation system that measures distance, time, speed and determines the location of objects anywhere on the Earth. The system was developed, implemented and operated by the US Department of Defense. The basic principle of using the system is to determine the location by measuring the distances to the object from points with known coordinates - satellites. The distance is calculated from the signal propagation delay time from sending it by the satellite to receiving it by the GPS receiver antenna.
GLONASS(Global Navigation Satellite System) - Soviet and Russian satellite navigation system, developed by order of the USSR Ministry of Defense. The principle of measurement is similar to the American system GPS navigation. GLONASS is intended for operational navigation and time support for ground, sea, air and space-based users. The main difference from the GPS system is that GLONASS satellites in their orbital movement do not have resonance (synchronism) with the Earth's rotation, which provides them with greater stability.

This model undermined the confidence in Sony, at first it was normal, and then the troubles just started to piss off. It cost like that 9k, it was possible to put 8 gigs of memory there, well? If Sony products give such jokes at overprice, then wait for no less cool jokes in older models.

I bought it for 7800 in the first store I came across instead of the dead Xperia Miro. The tasks were: androyd 4, mp-3 player, flashlight, long battery life at 30% charge, camera, A-GPS, and price within 5000). I didn’t find it))) You could order Umi, but I had 10,000 rubles and 10 minutes before the store closed. What I got: The screen is excellent. Performance - after Miro everything "flies". The charge lasts 2 days or longer, which was a pleasant shock. At first, at the slightest pressure on the case in your pocket, the phone rebooted. As a result, I bent the SIM card holders and it became possible to "even drop". For 4 months, it has never rebooted again, and has not hung. The brightness of the screen in the mode "from the light sensor" does not change, it just jumps to 1/3 and that's it. Camera - with a very small viewing angle, mediocre but does an excellent job of photographing A4 documents. For measuring the premises, too, will go. The memory is initially crammed with default applications and you have to choose - either 2Gis or Sberbank online. Two no longer climb. An unpleasant surprise with GPS./GLONASS. Miro determined the location in 10 seconds even in motion and with an accuracy of less than a meter. Here the accuracy is 10-20 meters, the direction of movement is not determined at all. On the Google map, rushing around like crazy. "Quick" start - takes about 2 minutes, and driving at all may not start until you stop. For Yandex navigator and 2gis, this accuracy is suitable, but if you need to turn on the navigator on the way, this is a complete setup. Two sims work stably at the same time. On additional internet speed is minimal. Bottom line: I am very satisfied with the purchase, for SUCH PRICE it turned out to be an excellent device. If the GPS worked fine, then it would be perfect. I'm used to the gigantic size, it's simply irreplaceable for work. Whom the characteristics suit - I definitely recommend.

The device is about three years old, has seen a lot, there were falls from a height of four meters onto a concrete floor, numerous falls from a height of a meter, an unceremonious attitude, the phone has a broken screen, the case is falling apart, the back cover is glued, but despite all this, it is still works like from a store, the phone is a hard worker, I think it will live for more than one year :)

Do not take it in any case - for those 10-11 thousand rubles that they ask for it, you can take a normal Chinese and not overpay for a dying brand. The phone can only be used as a simple dialer - otherwise its functionality is just the worst.

I want to mention his exorbitant survival rate - he fell into a puddle and lay in it for more than 30 seconds, after which he worked like from a factory. I fell from the 3rd floor - the protective film and a microscopic piece of paint on the sound button were scratched, falls on the floor / tile were made in the n-th quantity, but without any damage to the insides or a decrease in performance. The phone is 3.5 years old, only a relatively worn out battery and battle scars on the case can give away its age. If you want a phone that will not shatter to pieces at the slightest touch, due to your slovenliness (hands out of ...), sit in the social. networks / watch videos, then this is a great option for your money. The main camera is enough to take pictures of average quality, but no more.

In general, I bought this phone almost a year ago, at first I read everything that is written here, I was a little upset, I thought that like all phones, everything would get worse after a while, but this did not happen, after 10 months it is like new. Yes, there is not enough memory, I just put root through the usual KINGROOT application and deleted all the standard applications to hell, and installed applications I transfer to SD via App2sd. As a result, about 1GB of built-in free memory hangs stably. I also turned off all unnecessary background applications, and operas. The memory is freer and the battery has become even less. It flies like an airplane, does not lose connection, in general, even after iphone 5s? it works quite well with it.

I like both the look and the size of the phone itself. But the lack of memory is sometimes very noticeable. Although when I took down the extra programs, everything fell into place. And productivity has increased and the ability to update applications. Like the build quality. It doesn't creak or squeak anywhere. Not long ago I thought about changing the device and realized that there is nothing sensible now on the market in this price category, according to the parameters that interest me. I do not take into consideration any xiaomi and so on. Well, the camera is weak, although when I bought it, this parameter was not important for me. The battery suits completely. Enough for a day calmly and with a margin. With active conversations and correspondence, at least 2-3 hours of Internet per day, navigator and Wi-Fi. And by the evening another 20% remains. If all this is turned off, then I do not approach the charge for two days stably. I don’t know about others, but the top of the phone gets very hot when using the navigator. What does it get so hot that if at that moment someone calls, then the phone cannot be brought to your ear. Really hot. and the rest is a solid four

Budget device from Sony - I really liked the yellow E3, it looks cool. There is a version with LTE and two SIM cards, an IPS display, good performance, a regular SIM card. Hey Sony, everyone is interested in knowing the prices of new items! ..

To begin with, I recommend watching the video, I’ll immediately remind you that we shot detailed and long video reviews of all Sony’s new products, you can watch them at the beginning of each article - if you don’t have enough information in the text version, be sure to watch the videos.

Design

The dimensions of the smartphone are 137.1 x 59.4 x 3.5 mm, weight ... However, I obviously started the wrong way. What do you think when someone says "budget Android smartphone"? You obviously don't think anything good. Sony decided to change this situation and make a fun budget smartphone based on Android! And you know what, it worked out perfectly! If I need something just for calls, some workhorse for one or two working SIM cards, then I will gladly buy a yellow Sony Xperia E3. You can’t even imagine what a nice plastic it is, it’s rough, traces are invisible, it looks very cool in any light, and you can’t say at all that this is an inexpensive thing. In addition to yellow, there are also traditional colors, although orange is more similar to brown - the company considers it orange. It looks like brown to me. I don't know why. White is cool, black is simple, but yellow, yellow is just a hit.

All connectors are open, there is no water protection here. With control, everything is clear, with connectors too, here is the usual 3.5 mm (not five-pin), microUSB, under the removable battery cover there is a regular slot for a SIM card, microUSB memory cards. Although the budget, but you can put a memory card.

Display

Diagonal IPS-display - 4.5 inches, resolution - 854 x 480 pixels, as before, I would say that I want to look at the serial samples of this device. In prototypes, the screen is not bad.

Performance

There will be two versions, with one SIM card and LTE support (yes, the cheapest Sony smartphone with LTE), with two SIM cards and 3G support, quad-core processor, frequency - 1.2 GHz, Adreno 305, smart, you can try to run heavy games, but don't expect much. Used 1 GB random access memory, 4 GB of memory is built-in, Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth are here, everything is clear with this.

Food

It uses a 2300 mAh battery, you can expect to work during the day, nothing more. Any microSD cable can be used for charging.

Camera

Camera 5 MP, front camera 0.3 MP, there is a function for recording video on the display.

conclusions

I didn't like the compact version as much as I liked the yellow E3 - once again I repeat my point, among budget Android smartphones this is really a great find, especially the dual SIM version. Bright design, IPS display, good performance, there is a version with LTE, now we are waiting for the price. The device will go on sale this quarter.
